GRASP

Global Risk Assessment Platform (GRASP)

The GRASP is a risk assessment system for evaluating warehouse and museum facilities. Its development was catalyzed by a 2004 fire at the London Momart Warehouse, which destroyed hundreds of millions of dollars of artwork.

Warehouses play a critical role in safe-guarding property belonging to private collectors, museums and galleries world-wide. While vast troves of priceless personal art and objects are given over to warehouses for safekeeping, there is currently no recognized standard by which the facility, its operations, and its policies can be assessed to insure the optimal safety of its valuable contents. With this in mind, AXA ART Group hired Global Risk Partners to develop a web-based Global Risk Assessment Platform (GRASP) to create and manage a risk assessment system for evaluating different warehouse facilities. Today, GRASP is part of AXA ART Group's worldwide risk management initiative called artprotect™.

The objective of GRASP is to provide a single summary page for individual storage facilities which assesses specific risk and safety factors against standard criteria. During the in-depth assessment, over 1200 questions are asked, a series of tests are conducted and an onsite inspection is made by a professional and independent security risk surveyor. To ensure objectivity, the questioning process is binary; all answers are in Yes/No format. The system is designed to weight the significance of different risks, thus emphasizing priorities in respect of security improvements. All findings are kept in the strictest confidence. Each survey provides an overall score, a report indicating critical areas, and a checklist of professional recommendations in order to improve or mitigate critical risk areas and processes efficiently.

Areas covered by GRASP include:

  • Physical security including design and construction
  • Manned security
  • Electronic security
  • Fire detection and suppression
  • Environmental controls
  • Inventory and asset controls including hanging and installation of art
  • Institutional policies and procedures
  • Management oversights and controls
  • Contingency and emergency planning
